Having Problems With Snoring?

Find out why snoring is a concern and how our team can help you treat it.

Snoring isn’t just a nightly nuisance for your partner; it could also impact the quality of your sleep and your health. That’s why loud or persistent snoring can and should be checked out by our Stockbridge, GA, ENT doctors Dr. Michael Avidano and Dr. Blanca Durand and the team at Southern Crescent ENT to find out why you’re snoring and how to get it under control for better sleep, better health and a happier partner.

What Causes Snoring?

Most people will snore at some point during their lifetime. This could be due to a cold or sinus infection, a late meal or a night of consuming alcohol; however, if you are dealing with persistent snoring, this could be caused by an obstruction of the airways or a deviated septum. Of course, since many people who snore have obstructive sleep apnea (but may not even know it), it’s essential to turn to our Stockbridge, GA, ENT team to rule out sleep problems.

Is It Sleep Apnea?

If snoring is a chronic issue for you, this could be a sign of a more severe sleep condition known as obstructive sleep apnea. This condition causes irregular breathing or pauses in breathing while you sleep. Not only does this make people wake up feeling exhausted this can also lead to health complications such as heart attack and stroke if not properly treated. While not all snorers have sleep apnea, the majority of people with sleep apnea are chronic snorers.

It could be sleep apnea if you experience any of these symptoms,

  • Extreme daytime fatigue that doesn’t go away
  • Brain fog
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth or sore throat
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Needing to nap during the day
  • Easily nodding off during the day
  • Increased mood swings

How Is Snoring Treated?

We will first need to figure out why you are snoring. Imaging tests can allow us to examine the nasal passages better to look for nasal polyps or a deviated septum that could be leading to snoring; however, we will also want to find out if you could have sleep apnea, as this condition will require a CPAP mask, oral device or subdermal implant (we can talk to you about your options). A deviated septum can also be corrected, and nasal polyps can be removed through endoscopic sinus surgery.
