Got Chronic Sinusitis?

You're not alone. Chronic sinusitis is a common condition in which the cavities around nasal passages become swollen and inflamed. Chronic sinusitis lasts several weeks and can linger for years. Dr. Richard Nass in New York and East Hampton, NY, can tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about chronic sinusitis.

Causes Of Sinusitis

Most cases of chronic sinusitis develop following an acute sinusitis infection. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, an autoimmune reaction or deviated septum. Fungal infections may also cause sinusitis. This is especially true in people with impaired immune systems. In some cases, infection spreads to a cheekbone (maxillary) sinus from an infected tooth.

Symptoms Of Sinusitis

At least two of the primary symptoms of sinusitis must be present with confirmation of nasal inflammation for a diagnosis of the condition. Symptoms of sinusitis may include educed sense of taste and smell, nasal discharge, nasal obstruction or congestion and pain, swelling around your eyes, nose, cheeks or forehead. Other signs and symptoms pf sinusitis can include ear pain, sore throat, fatigue, bad breath, nausea and coughing.

Diagnosis of Sinusitis

If you think you have sinusitis, see a ear, nose and throat doctor in New York or East Hampton for proper diagnosis. Diagnosis depends on symptoms and requires an examination of the nose, throat, and sinuses. A thin, flexible tube with a fiber-optic light inserted through your nose allows your physician to see the inside of your sinuses. Images taken using a MRI or CT scan can show details of your sinuses and nasal area.

Treatment for Sinusitis

If your doctor thinks a bacterial infection is to blame, they may prescribe antibiotics. In some cases, your physician may prescribe inhaled steroids to bring down the swelling in the sinus membranes. Your physician may prescribe decongestants to lower the amount of mucus in your sinuses. Occasionally, if you have sinusitis that keeps coming back, surgery is the best choice.
